A watchman appeared before a magistrate yesterday after he allegedly assaulted a teacher, hitting him with a chair for reporting him to superiors.

Victor Mizzi, 51, of Zabbar, was charged with causing serious injuries to Anton Briffa at St Joseph School, Marsa last month.

Briffa told Magistrate Lawrence Quintano yesterday he had reported Mizzi because he was failing to turn up for work and during a disciplinary board hearing the case against Mizzi the accused pounced on him "like a tiger" and hit him with a chair.

Asked by Dr Giannella Caruana Curran, who is appearing for the accused, whether he was kept under observation in hospital following the incident, Briffa said he was treated for a bruise he had suffered under his left eye and then released.

Police Inspector Ramon Mercieca is prosecuting.

Dr Malcolm Mifsud appeared parte civile.
