In this day and age hand-manufactured silverware is a rarity except when one orders specific items to give as gifts on particular occasions.

There are connoisseurs who try to embellish their homes by purchasing antique silver items mostly from the English market. But as older silver articles have disappeared from the antique markets, silversmiths in various countries have set up shop to produce highly ornate, decorative and handmade silver items.

The craftsmen of Florence are no exception. They belong to a highly esteemed class of artists who have throughout the centuries embellished the noble houses of Florence and the whole of Italy with their creations.

Their ecclesiastical silverware has not only adorned the churches of Florence but most of the cathedrals and basilicas of Europe.

Gaba Gioielli has acquired a small but highly priced collection of heavy handmade silver items from some of the best workshops in Florence.

These same workshops are often commissioned by various governments and international agencies to produce gifts, which are usually given to visiting heads of state or dignitaries.

All the sterling silver items, presently on display at Gaba Gioielli in Naxxar Road, Lija, were designed as prestigious artefacts in modern residences to be looked at in awe, loved and handed over to future heirs.

To complement these pieces, one can also view a unique selection of other ornaments designed by world renowned Roberto Cavalli, Del Conte and countless other Italian designers.

Moreover, in the jewellery section one can also feast one's eyes with diamond jewellery that has been especially designed for the Gaba Gioielli Collection.

The exhibition will run daily until June 12 and is open all day.
