Malta trio reach last 32 in Euro Championship

Alex Borg, Duncan Bezzina and Simon Zammit all qualified for the last 32 stage of the European Championship currently being played in Volkermarkt, Austria.

Bezzina yesterday beat Ede Dunai, of Hungary 4-3 to finish third in Group A with five wins from seven matches. The match was balanced all the way but Bezzina, who recovered from 3-1 down, was the more in-form player also hitting a 100 break in the third frame.

Borg finished second in Group B after chalking up six wins from seven matches. In his last match, the Malta champion beat Jussi Tyrkko, of Finland, 4-1, with breaks of 73, 76 and 87.

Zammit just made it to the KO stages of the tournament after qualifying fourth best from Group F. In a decisive match against Austria's Oliver Doppler, Zammit won 4-2 for his fourth win from seven matches.
