In line with the spirit of the moment, the Athens Olympics and the EU's Education through Sport campaign, the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC) are inviting schools, clubs, local councils and other sports bodies to join in the promotion of an active lifestyle by participating in the annual Olympic Day Run.
Every year during June, the National Olympic Committees worldwide celebrate the Olympic Day Run in honour of the foundation of the International Olympic Committee and the re-establishment of the Olympics on June 23, 1894.
This year's run will be sponsored by McDonald's as part of their initiative to encourage the public to "Go Active".
With the assistance of the Malta Amateur Athletics Association, the run this year will be held on June 20, starting at 8.30 a.m. The routes both start and finish in Republic Street, Valletta.
There will be a 2km race for U-12s, a three-kilometre fun run and five-kilometre race around the city bastions. Olympic Day Run mementoes including an official IOC certificate will be distributed to all participants.
The objective of this run is to support the goals of the Olympic Movement and the ideals of Olympism.
Blending sport with culture and education, it seeks to create a way of life based on joy found in effort, educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.
One may obtain more details from McDonald's outlets or the Malta Olympic Committee (tel. 21-332801 - e-mail: moc@nocmalta.org).
