Nature Trust, the environmental NGO, has applauded the recent shift in the attitude of the lawcourts towards harsher fines as a punishment for illegal hunting practices, in addition to the confiscation of hunting equipment for more serious offences.

Nature Trust said it was satisfied that the lawcourts were acting as role models and reflecting the increasing dissatisfaction of Maltese society with illegal activities which harmed nature.

It said it looked forward to further positive responses by the law courts in the future when civil society intensified its calls for the earlier transposition of the Birds Directive into Maltese law.
