We owe it to the memory of those Maltese who went to Scutari, to correct the statement by FWA director Mario Farrugia (May 10), that three nuns were recruited.
In fact, three doctors - Dr C. Bellanti, Dr V. Muscat and Dr S.L. Pisani - left with Miss Nightingale in mid-October 1854 on board HMS Algiers Fury.
My ancestor, Salvatore Pisani, had met Florence Nightingale in Kaiserswerth Hospital, in Germany where she was training in 1852 and this resulted in their contact when she passed through.
She wrote excellent reports on these doctors, in particular about Pisani's work in Scutari, to the Governor of Malta.
No nuns from Malta were there however.
