The May meeting of the Malta Mathematical Society will feature a talk titled "It's not about the computer" by Joseph Mamo.

For the past decade teachers of mathematics in secondary schools have been encouraged to use computers in teaching mathematics. The Secondary Education Certificate Mathematics Syllabus (2002) stipulates that pupils should be given opportunities to use calculators and computer software.

The mathematics syllabi highlight the potential this technology has to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and specify how software can be used across the mathematics curriculum.

Joe Mamo, mathematics co-ordinator at the M.A. Vassalli Junior Lyceum, will discuss issues related to the use of the computer in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Room 316 in the Maths and Physics Building at the University of Malta.
