An animal organisation has embarked on an ambitious quest to purchase a fully equipped animal ambulance from the US.
SOS Animals is determined to raise the necessary funds for the Lm30,000 vehicle, which would cater for an ever-increasing demand.
According to a spokesman, the ambulance will be presented to the Civil Protection department who will operate it on a 24-hour basis.
Ironically, SOS Animals is the same organisation which recently sent out an SOS after its bank balance dried up. But thanks to an appeal made through The Times, the organisation managed to raise some Lm1,000.
"That response showed that people do care, and gives us courage to do more for the animals," the spokesman said.
SOS Animals was set up by a group of animal welfare societies in Malta, which are involved in both education and fieldwork concerning stray, sick and injured animals.
One of the aims of SOS Animals is to offer financial aid to the numerous volunteers carrying out work in different localities. It also strives to provide funds for the treatment of sick and injured pets whose owners cannot afford to pay vet fees.
Donations towards the ambulance may be made directly into two bank accounts - Bank of Valletta 40010183469 or HSBC 040095366001.
One may also send an SMS to: 50616000 for a 50c donation; 50617358 for Lm1; 50618071 for Lm2; 50618914 for Lm3 and 50619209 for Lm5.
