Evair Grech is a 12-year-old student attending Form 2 at the Hamrun Junior Lyceum and like other boys of his age he has already made up his mind about his future career... he wants to become a veterinarian.

An animal lover since he was very young, Evair was touched by a report in The Times about the crippled dog that required equipment to walk on his fore legs and he made the first move.

He contacted Freddie Fenech of Abandoned Animals Association and offered to help care for dogs at AAA's animal sanctuary in Luqa in his free time.

The boy said he adored animals and simply described people who maltreat them as "ignorant".

Mr Fenech said he was encouraging the boy to achieve his ambition.

For the time being he is giving him the facility to join elder volunteers at the sanctuary. He is also trying to make arrangements for the boy to gain some first-hand experience on animal treatment in a veterinary clinic.

The association was also willing to help the boy in his studies if he pursued his ambition to become a vet, Mr Fenech said.

Mr Fenech carried with him to the offices of The Times eight eight-week old puppies that were abandoned by someone near the Hunter's Tower, in Marsaxlokk. The person who found the crossbreds took them to his home and contacted Mr Fenech.

The AAA has opened an Abused Centre at 35, Valley Road, Msida. Although the centre is manned for most of the time, anyone needing assistance is advised to contact Mr Fenech on 9946 4182 or 7929 7930, before calling.

AAA is also holding open days on Saturdays and Sundays and on public holidays at the Luqa dog sanctuary. Those intending to visit should also contact Mr Fenech for an appointment.
