Resort's expansion proposal being evaluated

The Malta Tourism Authority's product planning and development directorate board will on Wednesday evaluate an expansion proposal by the Mellieha Holiday Centre, the authority said.

Dansk Folke Ferie president Benny Overgaard said this week that an application for the expansion project was submitted in April 2003.

Dansk Folke Ferie is the foundation which runs the Mellieha Holiday Centre, better known as the Danish Village. Mario Attard, director of the product planning and development directorate, said yesterday the company approached the MTA some time ago and the authority had advised Mellieha Holiday Centre to get its paperwork in order so that it could process the application. MTA had now processed the application and would be submitting it to the directorate's board for evaluation on Wednesday.

Mr Attard is meeting the company's senior management today. When reporting on an interview with Mr Overgaard yesterday, The Times wrongly said that an application by the Mellieha Holiday Centre was still pending before the Malta Environment and Planning Authority more than a year since it was submitted. The application was in fact submitted to the Malta Tourism Authority and not to Mepa.

The mistake is regretted.
