Nineteen workers have lost their jobs with two companies, the General Workers' Union said yesterday.
Four of the workers were with MCL Components Ltd of Bulebel and 15 with Estro Clothing, which is based in Corradino.
The union said the reasons given by the companies for the discharges were a drastic drop in orders in the case of MCL and loss of markets and no contracts in the case of Estro.
MCL Components employs about 20 workers and produces plastic containers for water and paint for the local market.
Estro Clothing, which produces jeans for export, had already discharged 80 workers in 2002.
The union said it was trying to find alternative work for the discharged workers despite the huge difficulties facing industries in the manufacturing sector.
