Mario Tabone, chairman of Heritage Malta, has come up with the bizarre idea of confiscating the bronze cannon of the Gozo Cathedral and storing them in some museum where people will not give them a second glance. He gives as a pretext that these solid bronze cannon are suffering "irreversible damage due to their being exposed to the elements".

If the civilised world uses this strange argument, then all bronze statues will be taken down from their pedestals and stored in museums. Imagine the palace courtyard without the bronze Neptune or New York without the statue of Liberty!

These cathedral bronze cannon are now a part of the cathedral, a real landmark - a photo spot for all, especially tourists and their children. Cannon are not made for museums but for battles and wars - they are strong enough to face the elements and the saltwater on ships.

If Dr Tabone and his so-called experts really care about Gozo, they should visit the Gozo Citadel and come up with some positive idea, not be negative. Malta Heritage should be embellishing our squares not depleting them of historic artefacts. Art belongs to the people and should be enjoyed by everyone and all.

I hope the society Wirt Ghawdex (Gozo Heritage) will take a stand on this issue and make its voice heard!
