The right man

I feel it is timely for me to augur my very best wishes to Ian Spiteri Bailey in view of the upcoming European parliament elections in June.

His first cousin and I grew up together and I know Dr Spiteri Bailey and the family very closely.

Dr Spiteri Bailey would be the ideal MEP, not only because of his legal knowledge in one of the most important sectors - EU labour and social policy law - but for his great undisputed integrity, his honesty and, last but not least, modesty.

If people want an MEP who will be close to them at all times; if they want an MEP who will listen to their problems and represent their doubts and fears; if they want a politician who gives priority to the humane element and not to personal interest and fame, then Dr Spiteri Bailey is the right person.

At this stage, I sincerely feel it is of the utmost importance for every Maltese citizen to forget partisan politics and to vote first and foremost for their own interests.

I would have voted for Dr Spiteri Bailey even if he stood as an independent candidate. To be quite frank, I believe that his reputation and background - not only as a lawyer who has worked his socks off for Union Haddiema Maghqudin but as a person - stand on their own and do not require the backing of any party.

With all due respect to some of Dr Spiteri Bailey's competitors, some of them are a far cry from what Malta really needs at the European parliament of tomorrow. I have heard all the MEP candidates making their debut on radio or TV and have serious doubts as to whether they are properly prepared or really aware of the responsibility they will be shouldering should they be elected!

He has been working towards this for many years and now he deserves to be entrusted with the mission which I am sure he will accomplish with great efficiency (it is part of his nature) and ease.
