The picture of Alex Manchè, the young heart surgeon taking part in a marathon of music whose worthy cause was pointed out in The Times, together with the apt title, "Music from the heart", brought to my mind another well-known gentleman with the same qualities.

He is Dr Manchè's grandfather, Albert, who used to undergo all sacrifices, even after working night duties for a whole week at Cable and Wireless, to play the piano at the Salesian Oratory while conducting his then well-known Strauss Orchestra, or playing the organ at St Gregory's and St Patrick's. He taught the piano to young Dr Manchè and instilled in his little mind "Play, play, play, so long as it is for charity".

Well done Dr Manchè and keep it up!
