The European Movement (Malta) yesterday celebrated European Unity or the end of one of Europe's biggest divisions ever, which was put to an end by enlargement. The European Movement has uninterruptedly celebrated Europe Day since the Movement was established in Malta in December 1965.
This year's Europe Day was a special one for Europe and for Malta as well - which finally attained membership of the EU, a goal towards which the European Movement (Malta) has worked hard for throughout the years.
The European Movement's job is not complete though. In this new context it wants to play an impartial, objective and at times critical role to help the Maltese people not only better understand the implications of membership but to help them grasp the opportunities as well.
In this task we welcome everyone's support and interest. On this day we would also like to remember and commemorate the many citizens who in the past contributed to the Movement's success through their voluntary contributions. They are too many to mention here and many of them have since passed away. But we have not forgotten their contribution towards the achievement of this important membership goal, which would have been impossible had they not kept the flame burning, passing it from one generation of volunteers to another.
