A weekend outing for all the family is being held at Liceo Mikiel Anton Vassalli on Friday and Saturday. The school is set in magnificent open countryside with greenery and views extending as far as the eye can see.
During the weekend the school will also be holding a 36-hour sports marathon. Staff, parents and students have put in a lot of effort to ensure the success of the event, being held in aid of the Community Chest Fund and the School Council Fund.
HSBC and Maltacom are the main sponsors of this fourth marathon, an event that has become a fixture in the school's annual calendar.
All Liceo Vassalli students have been given sponsorship sheets. Sponsors offering Lm1 or more participate in a lottery. Several gifts worth over Lm30 each will be drawn on May 25. Go Mobile subscribers can text their donations of Lm1 and Lm2 on 5070-5001 or 5070-5002.
The marathon will be inaugurated by President Eddie Fenech Adami on Friday morning in the presence of Education and Youth Minister Louis Galea. Prior to the inauguration, MPs Carmelo Abela and David Agius, both former students at the Liceo, will be sweating it out in a Duathlon challenge. They will cycle from Parliament in Valletta to the school in Qormi where they will run the final part of the challenge.
The marathon will also include a six-a-side football tournament with the participation of national team coach and former captain Carmel Busuttil; a 2 km fun run with the participation of 2,500 students; and coaching clinics in five different sports. Other events include martial arts and karate tournaments. There will also be a Bonsai exhibition.
A Maltese night hosted by popular presenters Eileen Montesin and Joe Debono with the participation of several well-known entertainers will be held on Friday evening. Exquisite Maltese food will be served.
The marathon will be rounded off with a Bingo night at 6.30 p.m. and an Unplugged Concert hosted by local leading band Scream Daisy with guest participation of Ira Losco and Fabrizio Faniello on Saturday at 9 p.m. until 11 p.m., the official end of the marathon.
