A Libyan was yesterday fined Lm200 on being found guilty of importing a protected tortoise.

Abdulsalam H.M. Alsusi, 23, of Tripoli, was charged with importing a protected tortoise, of packing the tortoise in a cruel manner, causing it pain and discomfort and with importing an animal into the European Union without the necessary documentation.

Dr Franco Debono appeared for Alsusi.

Inspector Alexander Paul Miruzzi prosecuted.
