Nature Trust (Malta), the environmental NGO, has condemned the vandalism that occurred at the Wied Ghollieqa Nature Reserve.

More than 150 trees (aleppo pine, holm oak, mrytle, rosemary, carob, Buckthorn, olive and pomegranate) were burnt and much fauna killed in the process. The fire, Nature Trust said, was allegedly started by a pyromaniac.

The organisation said it will now be trying to collect funds to install CCTV cameras around the reserve in order to reduce such attacks in the future.

It urged the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to release the funds promised over three years ago under the Environment Initiatives Private Partnership for the reserve. Such funds, it said, would help improve the situation in the area. To date, most of the work done in the area was either through Nature Trust funds or through the help of sponsors.
