Nationalist MP Josef Bonnici yesterday resigned from the House of Representatives and the European Parliament following his appointment as a member of the European Court of Auditors.

His letter of resignation from parliament was read out by the Speaker, Anton Tabone, at the opening of yesterday's parliamentary debate.

Prof. Bonnici, a former minister for economic services, had been elected through a casual election and his successor, therefore, will be co-opted to the House.

The Electoral Commission is currently in the process of holding a casual election to fill the seat of former Foreign Minister Joe Borg, who resigned from the House following his appointment to the European Commission.
