Prisoners at the Corradino Civil Prison on Tuesday ended an eight-day hunger strike held to press for an amnesty which however has so far not been granted.

When contacted, a spokesman for the Home Affairs Ministry confirmed that the hunger strike was over and said that "so far no amnesty has been granted". He preferred not to comment further.

About 147 from a total of 250 inmates on April 28 began the hunger strike to pressure the government into granting an amnesty on the occasion of Malta's accession to the European Union.

Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl, the organisation working with prisoners and former prisoners, had disassociated itself from the hunger strike.
