I refer to the letter by Antonio Anastasi (March 4) regarding the need of medical screening before participating in scuba-diving. I endorse Mr Anastasi's argument since it would be sheer folly to disregard such an important safety procedure. Indeed, all those who participate in any form of physical activity should follow such a procedure. Since some years ago medical screening has become a standard requirement for prospective students of physical education in the B.Ed. (Hons) course at university.

At the Institute for PE and Sport we value the health and safety of our students who, during their four-year course, participate in a wide range of physical activity, ranging from team games to individual sport, from swimming to abseiling. Medical screening could prevent a number of undue problems.

Thus, may I reiterate my advice to all clubs and associations to have all their athletes undergo regular medical screening (especially for competitive activities). The same advice goes to those who attend fitness centres.

While research has proved that regular physical activity is beneficial to our well-being, intensive activity has to be regularly monitored since it could prove problematic to certain people who may be at risk without them even knowing. I would also encourage the Kunsill Malti Ghall-Isport to discuss this concern and perhaps issue appropriate regulations to this effect.
