The Party of European Socialists (PES) of which the MLP is a part of, is one of the keenest supporter of the process of European union and for this reason frequently comes into direct conflict with the British Conservatives and the Eurosceptics which have a strong following among the MLP's own supporters and delegates.
Last February, former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen presented a strategy paper drawn up by an international network of experts established by PES suggesting ways of creating five million additional jobs in the EU. There was little discussion of this important contribution by PES representatives in Malta.
The group of experts spent a year analysing and discussing the policy options. PES claims that ministers set themselves targets four years ago in Lisbon but have failed to live up to their own ambitions.
"It is now time to breathe new life into the Lisbon strategy if we are to succeed in our aim of making Europe the world's most competitive economy by 2010 while generating worthwhile jobs for our people and protecting the environment."
Mr Rasmussen's strategy set out more than 30 policy innovations. The strategy was well received by the Irish government which heads the EU Presidency until the end of June. PES applauded the Irish government for the seriousness with which it supported the Lisbon Strategy.
The Strategy paper presented by Mr Rasmussen is on the PES Web-site at www.pes.org.
