The European Society of Clinical Pharmacy, Special Interest Group Education and Training in association with the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Malta and the Pharmacy Practice Unit at the University of Strathclyde, UK, will be organising a course for clinical pharmacists and clinical teachers between July 12-16 at St Luke's General Hospital and Medical School.

This course has successfully trained over 100 practitioners and teachers from over 20 countries in the skills needed to practice and to teach in a patient-centred way.

The pharmacists' approach to the patient is examined using real cases on the hospital wards in Malta, working closely with local clinical pharmacists and an international team of clinical tutors.

The course is unique and is led by an international team that includes pharmacists and physicians dedicated to the provision of pharmaceutical care. Teaching is through practical work with patients on the wards, preparation of clinical documentation of drug therapy problems, combined with physician and pharmacist ward rounds.

The course includes case discussions of acute drug treatment strategies during hospitalisation and chronic disease management during the long-term care of the patient discharged from hospital. The course attracts university teachers, hospital pharmacists and community pharmacists.

The course will offer an opportunity for participants already developing their practice to contribute poster demonstrations of their own work in the field of providing clinical services and in clinical pharmacy teaching. The aim is to provide experience of clinical case rounds with physicians and to demonstrate good practice in the use of case discussion and case presentation in the formation of the clinical pharmacist.

At the end of the course participants will be able to practise a systematic approach to identifying and solving drug therapy problems, practise the collection of information from the patient care setting, practise the design of a pharmaceutical care plan for a patient, discuss patients' pharmaceutical care plans with physicians and recognise good practice for clinical pharmacists and clinical pharmacy teachers.

The goal of the course is to provide an opportunity to develop patient-centred teaching and practice skills in a clinical environment that will allow the individuals to develop skills with feedback from experienced tutors and clinical practitioners.
