Over 10 staff members of Razzett tal-Hbiberija in Marsascala rolled up their sleeves and headed to Valletta to help YMCA with its new shelter for the homeless called Dar Niki Cassar.

The work had to be carried out quickly in time for the opening and they were kept busy cleaning the cutlery, dusting, washing the floors, staining the wooden bunk beds and hanging up curtain rails.

Razzett tal-Hbiberija general manager Nathan Farrugia said YMCA, a non-profit organisation, was giving free services to homeless people.

"This is a way for our organisation to show solidarity with another which faces similar hurdles, mainly finance-related. We have actually practised what we constantly preach to the public in respect of the need for volunteers in organisations like us," he said.

YMCA Valletta chairman Jean Paul Mifsud welcomed the group and thanked Razzett tal-Hbiberija for the gesture.

"This is also a message for all charitable organisations in our country to cooperate with each other and YMCA will definitely reciprocate this effort," he said.

Anyone wishing to volunteer may contact the two organisations at YMCA, 178, Merchants Street, Valletta on 2124 0680 or Razzett tal-Hbiberija, Zinzell Street, Marsascala on 2163 6526.
