I agree wholeheartedly with Mr Oliver Attard (The Sunday Times, April 18), about advertising Malta as a tourist destination abroad.
In Ireland, the lack of publicity for Malta is much worse than it is in Britain. Apart from the fact that no billboards advertising Malta are to be seen in the main thoroughfares, it seems that not a single travel agent advertises Malta as a holiday destination.
To make matters worse, an advert on TV stated that there is a return flight from Ireland to Malta every day. Can Air Malta please clarify if there is a flight every day from Ireland, and if there is, which airport does Air Malta use? As far as I know, flights to Malta from Ireland are from Dublin airport, on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. On the other hand there are five daily flights to Spain from Cork alone.
The Malta Tourism Authority must get down to working on this if they really want to get the Irish holidaymaker to visit Malta. And believe me, they do want to visit Malta, but not enough is being done to attract the Irish market.
