Victoria Council recently announced that the Steering Committee for the Creation of Controlled Residents' Parking Schemes has acceded to its request for the controlled parking scheme in the locality to be amended

The parking scheme, which was introduced about three years ago, originally covered two zones. Zone A covered the streets in the centre where one could park for an hour with the use of parking dials to keep time. Residents of this area were exempt from these restrictions.

Zone B covered the secondary streets of the centre, where parking dials were used to mark two-hour parking limits. Residents of this area were not required to adhere to these restrictions. Parking in the rest of Victoria was without restrictions.

This scheme was amended by the previous council by removing all Zone B and extending Zone A's time limit to one and a half hours.

Mayor Vivienne Galea Pace told The Sunday Times that it became clear that Victoria residents who did not live in Zone A felt discriminated as not all residents had the same privileges.

Shortly after the new council was elected last year, Mrs Galea Pace presented a proposal to retain Zone A's restricted parking scheme but to amend the Legal Notice by introducing the change "except for Victoria residents", which was unanimously agreed to by the councillors.

Eventually, the council was informed that its request was being granted for six months after which, if there were no negative effects on the whole concept of the controlled residents' parking scheme, the legal notice would be amended accordingly.

Currently, Victoria council is working to affect the necessary changes so that this amendment can come into force as soon as possible.
