Profile

Dr Janet Mifsud, B. Pharm (Hons), Ph.D. (QUB), senior lecturer, department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Malta, is Commissioner, National Commission for the Promotion of Equality for Men and Women

Dr Mifsud obtained her Ph.D. in pharmacology at Queen's University of Belfast. Her doctoral research focused on the pharmacokinetic processes involved in the duration and magnitude of pharmacological effects of medicines, specifically chiral drugs. She has published extensively in this area.

Dr Mifsud lectures in pharmacology to medical, pharmacy and dental students as well as Erasmus students at the University of Malta, and supervises students undertaking Master's and doctoral projects in neuropharmacology and pharmacokinetics, in collaboration with the Queen's University of Belfast, University of Dundee and University of Aberdeen.

She is on several international committees such as the Scientific Committee of the Mediterranean Epilepsy Society, a member of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences, EU Epharnet and EU Galenos networks, and the UNESCO Forum of Women of the Mediterranean.

Following close scientific collaboration she has also organised International Schools in Pharmacokinetics in conjunction with the University of Minnesota and the University of Pisa. She was also recently appointed secretary, European Epilepsy Academy.

Dr Mifsud has been invited annually by DG Research to attend the Women in Science fora in Brussels for three years, and she has also been appointed several times expert evaluator for proposals submitted under FP5 and FP6.

Locally, she is a member of the Gender Issues Committee of the University of Malta, the National Bioethics Consultative Committee, a member of the Medical Sub-Commissions of the Malta Sports Council and Malta Football Association, and is a member of the Public Service Commission. She was also FP5 chairman for Malta.
