Workers at Fort St Angelo have just unearthed a staircase leading to the shore area.

The authorities are currently investigating the discovery to see how far back it dates and to where it led exactly.

Ray Bondin, the coordinator of the Cottonera Rehabilitation Project, said yesterday that works at the fort were unearthing lots of interesting - if minor - things.

"Many things have yet to be discovered at Fort St Angelo," he said.

He said the stairs had probably been covered up during works in the 1970s. They were uncovered during works underway to remove the 1970s additions to the fort.
