Gozo wardens' role 'unacceptable'

The Gozo Tourism Association said wardens were in duty bound to maintain order but on the other hand it was not acceptable that the function of these officers was being rendered as revenue collectors.

The way wardens were dealing with the traffic problems was not acceptable, the association said.

Wardens must patrol streets and roads to keep order and prevent contraventions but it was not acceptable that they first allow the public to, for example, park wrongly and then issue tickets.

Most tickets were being given to Maltese residents and tourists who were visiting the island and who did not have enough knowledge of Gozo.

Flexibility must be the order of the day on such occasions, the GTA insisted.

While the association declared it was in favour of discipline and punishing those who acted irresponsibly it also advised that wardens must be instructed to help more in the organisation of the traffic flow in the island and to be posted in different areas where they could offer help and information to visitors.
