The Resources and Infrastructure Ministry has urged operators in the building industry to step up health and safety measures and to encourage their workers to attend health and safety courses.

Following what it called the unfortunate accidents at construction sites on Tuesday, the ministry said people in the industry should ensure that health and safety measures were followed.

Even though a legal mechanism had been set up, accidents at construction sites were still taking place. Although construction sites were dangerous places and likely to see accidents, good health and safety procedures must be ensured.

"Responsibility for health and safety measures at work is in the hands of employers in the first place but the workers themselves are still responsible for their health," the ministry added.

On Tuesday, a crane driver was injured when he tried to stop a runaway crane in Gzira and six construction workers were taken to hospital after a roof collapse in Qormi.
