Nature Trust Malta condemned what it described as atrocities being committed by disrespectful hunters during the spring hunting season.

The NGO said it was receiving numerous reports from its members from all over Malta and Gozo on indiscriminate shooting, featuring butchering of protected species, including honey buzzards, shooting in protected areas such as Comino and il-Maqluba and risk to public safety by hunters.

It urged the government to fall in line with its European commitments on monitoring and safeguarding protected species and to apply in full the European Union birds directive as quickly as possible.
