Labour Party leader Alfred Sant yesterday placed a wreath at the monument of Manwel Dimech in Castille Square, Valletta, in one of a series of activities organised in connection with the celebrations of Workers' Day on May 1.

Dr Sant said in an address it had been the Labour Party and socialism that had worked the hardest to introduce progressive, radical and revolutionary European lines of thought to Malta.

Dimech was European in the age of enlightenment, who believed that reason should prevail over tradition in the way life was organised. His and others' ideas of change were continental and progressive, and became a socialist current of thought, Dr Sant said.
