The United States Coast Guard will be conducting a two-week port security training programme at the Malta Freeport starting on Monday.

About 40 Maltese participants responsible for various aspects of port security are expected to attend the US government-sponsored course, the cost of which exceeds $40,000.

The US embassy said the course was being organised in recognition of Malta's strategic location at the centre of the Mediterranean and will be conducted by US instructors.

It would also assist Malta in meeting the International Maritime Organisation's International Ship and Port Facility Security Code requirements, which will come into effect on July 1.
