The Cabinet has discussed how local councils can become more involved in the government's strategy on information technology and communication, Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said yesterday.

Dr Borg, who is responsible for councils, was speaking during the launch of the Environmental Award 2004, organised by the Iklin council.

He said that EU membership would offer councils the opportunity to have five representatives and five substitutes in the committee of regions. The committee draws up the EU's local government policy.

The minister said that his ministry was examining several proposals regarding amendments to the Local Councils Act.

The process started in October during the national conference held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the setting up of councils.

Among the proposals received are those concerning the appointment of mayors, the term of a council and consultation of councils.
