Labour Party leader Alfred Sant said that since people had decided that Malta should form part of the European Union, it was not in the interest of the workers and of the self-employed to declare that a future Labour government would pull Malta out of the Union.
Dr Sant, who was speaking during a discussion meeting on "Gozo and the EU" organised by the Labour Youth Forum in Gozo, said the MLP was planning to set up a unit to monitor developments within the EU to ensure that Gozo would be able to face difficulties posed by membership while benefiting from any advantages.
Dr Sant said that although this may appear to be a difficult challenge, it was the duty of everyone to try to convince those who had not yet understood the new realities Malta was facing.
He added it was important for the MLP to have as many representatives in the European Parliament as possible.
In this way the Labour party would join European Socialists to ensure that Gozo would benefit from a regional policy that safeguarded employment, particularly in tourism, agriculture and fisheries and the crafts industry.
