The tireless Alfred Fenech is hoping to find a home for 12 dogs which were all individually abandoned in localities all over Malta on Sunday.
Mr Fenech, who has witnessed all kinds of cruelty to animals in the years he has been caring for animals, was stupefied to receive so many calls about abandoned dogs.
"Never in my life have I had to collect so many animals in one day. The situation is getting out of hand with people dumping animals as if they were getting rid of their rubbish," he said.
Mr Fenech, who runs the Association for Abandoned Animals, said the dogs were of different ages and breeds.
He is hoping that this summer the Malta Environment and Planning Authority will give him the green light to build a dog sanctuary at Maghtab.
Last year, the association acquired a plot of land at Xaghriet, in Maghtab on long lease. The sanctuary will house some 300 abandoned and homeless dogs. The project will cost about Lm80,000.
Those who wish to adopt the dogs can call Mr Fenech on 9946 4182. The association may also be contacted at PO Box 60, Gzira.
