I was shocked to read in a letter by Joseph Cortis that, on March 4, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority approved a road widening project involving the extension of the road from the De Rohan arch to the Cortis showroom at Zebbug.

In a country that is not capable of keeping up with the maintenance of its exiting road network, I simply cannot understand why we should waste valuable money on building new roads rather than arranging the existing network. The existing dual carriage way is already a waste in itself. Converting the existing road into a single carriage road can serve both the needs of commuters and would also give space for an internal road to be created to serve the school that was given a permit to open on a main road by this same planning authority that now has authorised the destruction of a whole stretch of fertile land. A solution to the existing problem can be found without it needing to create an environmental scar.

This does not mean that the existing road does not need to be put right. Every time it rains the road converts into a massive public swimming pool which only amphibious cars can cross. Furthermore if the government has money to waste on roads, works can be done on the rest of the road leading to Mdina. For those who have not understood which road I am referring to, it is that part of Mdina Road that can be marketed as roller coaster rather than a road.

If the ADT does not want to repair this particular road, I am confident that we will not be stuck to find roads that need a bit more than the normal shoddy patch work.

I would like to encourage environmental pressure groups to intervene in this issue. It probably would be too much to expect the same from Zebbug local council, yet one always hopes in a miracle!
