The editorial "Going to the polls in June" (March 16) purposely ignores the fact that Alternattiva Demokratika will be fielding Arnold Cassola for the European elections to be held on June 12. This omission is even more suspicious especially when one considers that Prof. Cassola has been serving as secretary general of the third largest group in the European parliament since 1999 and this makes him by far much more qualified and experienced than any one else fielded by the Nationalist Party or the Malta Labour Party.
I would like to point out that Prof. Cassola is a very influential member of the Green "family". In fact, he is much more influential than any Labour or Nationalist candidate can be within his/her respective political group in the European parliament. Both Prof. Cassola and Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party gave a valid contribution to the country during the negotiations phase, unlike the MLP who, like a spoilt little child, closed it eyes, stomped its feet and kept shouting "no, no, no"! One must also not forget that when the Nationalist government was telling the electorate that Malta was not eligible for any sort of funding after the September 2003 floods, Prof. Cassola found out that this couldn't be further from the truth and, in fact, Malta will be receiving around Lm0.5 million to make up for the damages incurred after the floods.
If we are to make the most out of our European Union membership then we cannot continue encouraging the present parochial, two-party political system, which is very far from the European reality, so ardently supported by The Times!
I encourage all free minded people, to voice their concern about the attitude The Times adopted in its editorial and to vote for Prof. Cassola on June 12 for a better Malta within a better Europe.
