Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna will on Sunday hold a day-long prehistory day that will attempt to recreate aspects of daily life as they may have been in prehistoric Malta.

The event - between 10 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. - will use scientific reasoning and documentary evidence to reconstruct ways of life from the distant time of Malta's temple period.

The event will be held at Kordin III temple at Paola, one of 24 historic sites currently held in trust by FWA. The temple is wedged between the Lourdes church and the MCAST institute opposite the Islamic mosque at the head of Corradino Hill.

Throughout the day guided tours by experts in archaeology will be provided around the site. Special hands-on interpretation will also be available by a combination of FWA volunteers and students from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Malta to suggest how corn may have been trashed, flint napped and pottery made at around the time when Kordin III temples were in use.

Experimental archaeology sessions for children will also be held by one of FWA's resident archaeologists. Throughout such sessions young visitors will be introduced to the basic principles and techniques of archaeological studies by being offered the opportunity to "excavate" a specially made "archaeological pit". A history timeline will also be recreated to make children understand the age of the temple in relation to present times.

A new guide book describing the history and nature of the site will be available on the day. The book was written by Nicholas Vella, lecturer in archaeology at the University of Malta and a member of the board of trustees of FWA.

Free information brochures will also be distributed to those attending.

The event is partly funded by the European Union through its Euromed Heritage II programme - Temper (Training, education, management and Pre-History in the Mediterranean) of which FWA is a partner.

A donation of Lm1 per visiting adult will be requested at the gate. It will go towards the much needed upgrading of the site. Entrance is free for those under the age of 16 years and FWA members. www.wirtartna.org
