Environmental NGO Nature Trust urged the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to hurry up and put in place the local plan for the south of Malta.
This, the organisation said, was in view of an increase in the number of applications for environmentally unfriendly developments in the area.
NT said the latest application was for the relocation of a hardstone quarry from Hagar Qim to Wied Moqbol despite the development site being close to an area of ecological importance, a scheduled area (coastal cliffs) and a nature reserve and despite the fact that there was a substantial number of mature carob trees there.
Additionally, a new service road would have to be constructed and traffic would increase in what was an essentially rural area, Nature Trust said.
