Italian Reforms Minister Umberto Bossi has been in a drug-induced coma for three weeks after suffering heart failure, but his condition is improving, a close ally said yesterday.

Welfare Minister Roberto Maroni said the leader of the right-wing populist Northern League was responding well to medication and would lead the party lists in the European parliamentary elections in June.

Mr Bossi was taken to hospital on March 11 and his family imposed a rapid news blackout on his health, fuelling media speculation that he might have suffered brain damage that would force him to quit politics.
