GTA meets self-catering operators

The Gozo Tourism Association recently met operators of self-catering accommodation to discuss their problems and exchange views on the tourism sector.

During the meeting the operators expressed their concern on the ferry timetables, the suspension of the baggage trolley service, the upgrading of roads leading to tourist attractions and construction works in tourist areas during the summer season.

The operators proposed a fixed-wing link between Malta and Gozo and urged the government to start working on the necessary infrastructure for this service.

GTA chairman Mario Loporto gave a detailed report on the association's involvement in the drawing up of the Special Needs Assessment Report for Gozo, and information on the projects approved by the Regional Committee. These projects include establishing a hotel school for ITS in Qala, a decompression chamber at the Gozo General Hospital, new dive reefs, a small vessel to provide night trips between Malta and Gozo, a direct coach service between Malta International Airport and Cirkewwa and the building of roads leading to principal tourist areas.

Reference was also made to the standards, regulations and contributions of the self-catering operators and it was agreed that this matter will be further discussed during a special meeting in the near future.
