A lion's roar

I refer to Evarist Saliba's reply to my letter regarding Anglu Farrugia's participation in the OSCE.

Mr Saliba has every right to voice his opinion and it is always refreshing to view a different opinion.

However, I still hold that Dr Farrugia did his duty with quiet dignity and courage. The fact that Eddie Fenech Adami resigned his post as prime minister, prior to Malta's entry into Europe, reminds me when Moses was allowed to see the Promised Land from afar but not to lead his people into it.

This leads me to believe that Dr Farrugia's contribution was not a donkey's bray, as Mr Saliba suggested, but a lion's roar.

With regard to Dom Mintoff, I disagree with Mr Saliba's version of events and believe that his contribution in the Helsinki Conference was crucial in raising awareness as to the importance of peace and security in the Mediterranean region. One has only to study speeches and statements made by President Guido De Marco, who is a keen advocate of such a policy, to appreciate Mr Mintoff's vision.

Mr Mintoff's diplomatic skills were publicly recognised by none other than Lord Carrington, a true expert in the diplomatic arena.

I thank Mr Saliba for his reply since I may learn our history "warts and all".
