Labour Party leader Alfred Sant said the joint committee set up by the party with local councils in the Cottonera area some weeks ago was looking upon the zone as having great potential for economic, cultural and social development.

Therefore, the MLP believed there was ample room for initiatives designed to boost work, business, education and culture, including taking action against illiteracy.

Dr Sant was speaking during a meeting between the committee and a number of self-employed persons from Cottonera.

Some of the self-employed complained that businesses in the area were not reaping any benefits from the yacht marina at Vittoriosa, as jobs were being given to workers who lived outside Cottonera.

Some also highlighted the problems they encountered in obtaining small loans from the banks.

On Thursday, Dr Sant addressed youths at a Freedom Day activity organised by the Forum Zghazagh Laburisti, which formed part of the party's programme to mark the 25th anniversary of Freedom Day.

Dr Sant said the MLP was giving a clear sign to youths not to be discouraged.

The party supported young people because it believed that the future depended on their skills and commitment.
