The proposal for new tariffs made by Maltacom was being "refined", company chairman Sonny Portelli told The Times yesterday.

A spokesman for the IT and Public Investment Ministry said the latest proposed framework of tariffs was "radically different" from what had been proposed so far.

Mr Portelli said it was too early to comment on the tariffs since discussions were still ongoing. However, a decision was expected within a few days.

IT and Public Investment Minister Austin Gatt said the ministry and Maltacom were working on a new proposal.

The ministry spokesman explained that the new proposal was based on three issues - an assurance that the social obligations of Maltacom will continue to be fulfilled since the company provides an essential service, an assurance that Maltacom is paid justifiably for its services and that it strongly promotes the use of broadband internet.
