The Lm250,000 upgrading project of the Upper Barrakka garden is expected to be completed within days with the place reopening in a few weeks after the area is cleaned.

Infrastructure and Resources Minister Ninu Zammit said the upgrading was part of a four-year project to rehabilitate Valletta's gardens.

Speaking during a visit to the garden, Mr Zammit said the project included general embellishment and the garden - considered as Malta's national garden - was given a more modern look.

The minister said all services in the garden had been improved, a new lighting system installed, new paving fitted, more trees planted and new benches and street furniture installed. He said bastions were cleaned and the garden's balcony restored. The kiosk and monuments were heavily refurbished.

Mr Zammit said the main aim behind the garden's restoration was to maintain and improve its historical value while introducing a design that complements the area and attracts visitors.

The garden was originally known as the Italy Bastion since the bastions of the area were under the authority of the Italian knights. The garden is in the highest part of Valletta and has the best view of the port.
