Rabbit breeders in Malta are gearing up to face the challenge of their European competitors when Malta joins the Union in one-and-a-half month's time. The council of the Malta Rabbit Club is encouraging members to be fully prepared.

Malta already enjoys many firsts in the rabbit world and the new challenges ahead will only force it to do even better and strengthen its position, the club said.

The club will be holding its first open show this year on Sunday at its headquarters - "The Nissen Hut", 3, Luqa Road, Qormi - opposite the Agricultural College, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The show has been organised for the past 40 years and is being sponsored by Borg Cardona & Co. Ltd of Balzan.

About 300 rabbits in a multitude of colours and varieties and representing about 40 different breeds will be exhibited.

There will also be a section for pedigree rabbits offered for sale directly by their breeders. Other attractions are the pet rabbits and the does with their litters of baby bunnies.
