The Maltese people will get a much clearer understanding of the difficulties our planet is struggling with once a new 3D film hits the Imax theatre on March 26.

SOS Planet will bring to Malta the steamy rainforests of Borneo, the wilds of the Arctic and the depths of the oceans, three of the most troubled environmental areas.

Audiences will watch animals trying to cope with the changing conditions of their habitats, the result of man's overuse of the planet's finite resources.

Theatre director Kate de Cesare asked what better way was there to help raise environmental awareness than through the medium of entertainment.

"Through the sheer size of the Imax screen and the incredible 3D effects, the audience will thoroughly enjoy the experience. A galloping sea horse, an octopus that makes you flinch, an orangutan playing ball in the trees and a polar bear family hurtling through icebergs off and out of the screen - those 3D animals are stunning," she said.

Ms de Cesare said this was a great opportunity to encourage conservation and raise global environmental issues.

SOS Planet will inform audiences of the cause and effect of environmental issues through computer-generated imagery.

The 3D movie is hosted and narrated by newsman Walter Cronkite. It is the first large-format film to feature character animation created with the latest digital technologies, using 3D and computer-generated animation to a greater extent than ever employed by a large format film.
