The second phase of road works in Paceville is 'on schedule' and should be ready before Easter, with the whole project expected to be concluded by summer.

Works are currently underway in St George's Road and Dragonara Road in Paceville as part of the embellishment of the entertainment mecca. Philip Fenech, hospitality and leisure representative of the GRTU - Malta Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises, explained that the project was split into three phases, the first part of which was finished by Christmas. A source close to the Works Division, which is doing the work, reiterated that the project was expected to be ready by summer. He said the second phase of the project would be ready in around 14 days and parts of the third phase have already started.

"We are within schedule and the planned phases are expected to be ready before summer," he said.

Planning for the project took into consideration the business community in Paceville and efforts were made to ensure that the work would not cause any avoidable problems.

Asked about this, Mr Fenech said that despite the obvious inconvenience to the outlets in the area, one had to keep in mind the importance of the end product. He described as positive the fact that the whole area was not being closed off completely.

"We would have preferred not to have any inconvenience at all but we have to be realistic," he said, in response to questions by The Times following complaints from outlet owners.

Work on the second phase of the project has been ongoing since Christmas.

Mr Fenech said that prior to the commencement of the works, an agreement had been reached that this should in no way hinder the operations of any establishment. He stressed the importance of the work being finished in the quickest possible time.
