A man who failed to pay maintenance to his wife as decreed by the Civil Court was yesterday imprisoned for seven days.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna noted that the Civil Court had, on September 17, 2002, decreed that John Beirne had to pay his wife Joanna Lm200 a week as maintenance for her and her child Sean.

Mrs Beirne complained she had received only Lm70 a week as from January 21, 2003, when she filed a writ of summons, and by that date, the accused had failed to pay Lm1,460.

The court decided that Mr Beirne had breached the Civil Court degree and sentenced him to prison.

Inspector Simon Galea prosecuted.
